Turbulent Identities

This exhibition hopes to explore how popular culture reinforces power imbalances between dominant and marginalized groups by selectively adopting indigenous practices and symbols. Many feel that after demanding assimilation and Westernization, the exploitation of cultures and identities for mainstream enjoyment is appropriative and perpetuates ideas of inferiority. Our aim is to curate a show that discusses the confusion between cultural exchange and cultural appropriation.
